Vertical platform lifts (VPL) and Incline Platform Lifts are devices that transport a single rider plus a wheelchair, power wheelchair or scooter.

Typically outdoors, Vertical Platform Lifts travel from a ground level to a deck or porch. These lifts are often also referred to as "porch lifts." Standard VPLs can range in travel distance up to ten feet. Weight capacity of these lifts range from 600-1,000 pounds. While most VPLs are electric with battery back-up, some lifts today are fully battery-powered, which allows for a much smoother and quieter ride. These lifts are typically either worm-gear/screw-nut or hydraulically driven.

Some standard or optional features of these lifts include power folding ramps at the ground level, interlocking electronic gates at the top landing, and under pan safety sensors to prevent injury to someone standing below the lift. They can also include illuminated platforms for nighttime riding, built in telephones in case of an emergency, and call/sends at the top and bottom landing for operating the lift empty.

VPLs are constructed of steel or aluminum and can be powder coated for optimum protection from the environmental elements. To further protect the lift and the rider from the weather, enclosures can be built around the lift or purchased from the manufacturer.

As the name implies, Incline Platform Lifts are designed to traverse straight or curved staircases carrying a wheelchair and the rider. Weight capacity of these lifts range from 500-600 pounds. Today, most Incline Platform Lifts are fully battery-powered. These lifts are typically either worm-gear, rack-and-pinion, or chain-driven.

Some standard or optional features of these lifts include mechanical folding ramps, non-skid surface, modular rail design, keyed access, fold-down seat, emergency stop button, and safety sensors on the platform.
